12 Canadian Music Companies and 8 Canadian Artists
Showcase for Japanese Music Industry
November 16 – 20, 2015
Over the last few years, CIMA has engaged in dozens of trade missions and showcase events in countries worldwide through our Canadian Blast export initiative.
Previous Canadian Music Missions to Japan, the second largest music market in the world, generated a total of $3.5 million in new business and 208 deals for Canadian music companies. This year’s Mission aims to duplicate its past success for the new delegation of 11 Canadian music companies representing hundreds of Canadian artists and sound recordings.
This marks CIMA’s fourth-ever trade mission to Japan, and is an initiative to assist its members to develop trade relations and new business opportunities in Japan for the export of Canadian music products. Potential revenue is anticipated to be from licensing masters, sub-publishing, neighbouring rights, touring opportunities and through new sources of revenue from digital and mobile content.
Japan is the second largest music market in the world, ranking first in the world for physical sales, third in digital sales, fourth in performance rights and third in synchronization rights revenues. The market offers an array of opportunities for Canadian music companies. There is a clear and demonstrated appetite for foreign music in Japan, which creates a path of opportunity for Canadian independents to travel.
The four-day program commencing on November 16 will include seminars, showcases, and networking opportunities with executives from the Japanese music and related industries. The program is enriched with guest speakers and important presentations about the Japanese music market.
This year’s Mission will include 8 Canadian artists performing at two important showcase opportunities – a public concert and showcase at duo MUSIC EXCHANGE in Tokyo, and ?another at the prestigious Oscar Peterson Theatre at the Canadian Embassy.
On November 17, Music Export Canada presents an invitation-only show at the Oscar Peterson Theatre in the Embassy of Canada to Japan. Artists are Brandi Disterheft (Justin Time Records/Wild West Artist Management), Declan O’Donovan (O’Donovan Music Productions), Myriad3 (Alma Records) and The Jessica Stuart Few (Creators’ Lounge Inc.)
Performing for the music industry and public at the Duo Music Exchange on November 19, and promoted by one of Japan’s largest promoters, Creativeman Productions, are Lyric Dubee (Lyric Dubee), The Lytics (Manitoba Music), Sc Mira (Pipe & Hat), and The Wooden Sky (Nevado Music).
“CIMA is excited to be producing this trade mission to Japan on behalf of our vibrant Canadian independent music businesses and their groundbreaking artists,” said Stuart Johnston, President of CIMA. “Returning to Japan will allow our delegates to build on our previous successes, re-establish business relationships and develop new working relationships.”
The following companies, including the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) are participating in the Mission:
