CIMA Welcomes Minister Joly’s New Creative Export Strategy

Today, Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly highlighted the Government of Canada’s investment of $125 million over 5 years to implement Canada’s first Creative Export Strategy. This includes the launch of the new Creative Export Canada funding program.

Over the last year, additional funding for the Canada Music Fund (CMF) and exporting dollars has been at the core of CIMA’s advocacy work. This important investment towards promoting Canada’s creative industries will strengthen Canada’s presence in international markets where the business relationships are being built, the deals are being made, and the jobs are being created. We are extremely encouraged by this announcement and support the government’s vision for export.

The budget allowance of $125 million over 5 years will be divided in the following ways:

-Increasing export funding for existing Canadian Heritage programs, including the $2.5M Canada Music Fund where 60% will be allocated to FACTOR and 40% to MusicAction.

-Supporting Canadian artists with additional resources in key Canadian embassies and consulates, such as New York, Paris, London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Shanghai, Mumbai, Mexico City, Tokyo and Sydney.

-Developing practical tools to support creative entrepreneurs, such as research, data gathering and statistics.

-The creation of Creative Export Canada, a new $7-million-per-year export program. The program is for Canadian companies and organizations that are ready to export and work in a creative industry or in support of one. Companies will have the opportunity to apply to the new Fund in the coming months. This fund will be accessible to all creative industries with no specific allocation per industry, making this a competitive process.

And Government-lead Strategic trade missions, like the mission to China in April that make it possible to develop creative markets and support towards Canada’s participation in international events to increase the export capacity of Canadian creative industries.

“Our creative industries have a wealth of talent with incredible economic potential in international markets. I made a commitment to support and strengthen our creative industries on the world stage, and our new Creative Export Strategy will do just that. Our plan will promote Canada’s economic growth, create well-paying jobs and showcase Canadian talent throughout the world.”

—The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage
