CIMA Launches New Industry Survey on Global Music Exporting

CIMA is happy to launch our “Music in Motion” survey, designed to research the costs of international touring for Canadian companies. The purpose is to help make a case for increasing public support for music exporting, given the substantial return on investment that can result from boosting this activity!

CIMA is launching an industry-wide study on music exporting, intended to generate more capital and funding opportunities to support Canadian exporting music companies and their artists. To do so, we will need your help!

We are launching our “Music in Motion” survey on Wednesday, August 24. Through your participation, we hope to gain a better understanding of:

  1. What export activities Canadian companies engage in
  2. The strategies behind those activities
  3. How much these activities cost
  4. Key international markets for Canadian music
  5. The discrepancy between current funding levels and the costs of exporting

As of right now, you can participate in the survey by clicking the following link!

It will take approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. The survey is open from now until September 16.

• The study, which is being performed by Nordicity, is designed to gather evidence on the realistic costs for international touring (i.e. all the marketing, promotion and logistical expense to support a Canadian artist outside of Canada).

To research these incremental touring costs, they will be compared to similar activities that are required of Canadian music companies and artists within the domestic market.

• Along with touring, the study has also been designed to research the costs of launching an artist, brand or new musical work in foreign markets – whether these markets are niche, geographically specific or global in scope – using traditional as well as new media platforms (i.e. online services) for music marketing and promotion.

• Finally, the study has been designed to clarify the return on investment that is generated for Canada – in terms of increased jobs, profitability, economic activity and other relevant measures – as a result of Canadian companies successfully exporting artists and music products to the world.

This data will enable CIMA to advocate for increased and sustainable government funding to help capitalize on the growing demand for Canadian music abroad, such as by making submissions to the Department of Heritage’s current policy review on supporting ‘Canadian content’ in a digital world.

The survey closes September 23, 2016. The results of the survey will be shared in late Fall, 2016.
