CIMA Congratulates the Government of Canada on the Passage of Bill C-11

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 27, 2023

TORONTO – The Canadian Independent Music Association congratulates the Government of Canada for passing Bill C-11, the Online Streaming Act, through Parliament. With Thursday’s final vote in the Senate, the Bill will now move to Royal Assent and will be made law.

CIMA strongly believes that the best way for Canadian artists to be discovered globally is for Canada to continue to develop incredible artists supported by smart, well-resourced, and highly competitive companies with IP ownership remaining in Canada. We believe that Bill C-11 can support this goal.

While the legislative process is now complete, CIMA remains ready and prepared to fight for Canada’s music sector during the implementation of the Act through the policy direction and CRTC processes to come. We remain focused on strengthening a music eco-system which adapts to the way musicians and businesses create and work in this rapidly changing technological environment.

We thank Minister Pablo Rodriguez and his team at the Department of Canadian Heritage for their work in moving forward with this Bill. CIMA also thanks Members of Parliament and Senators who supported this work for their advocacy for our sector.
